Plant Hormones

Rucete ✏ Biology In a Nutshell

1. Auxin (IAA - Indoleacetic Acid)

  • Promotes stem elongation
  • Involved in phototropism (response to light) and geotropism (response to gravity)
  • IAA is a naturally occurring auxin

2. Gibberellins

  • Stimulate stem elongation
  • Induce growth in dormant seeds, buds, and flowers

3. Cytokinins

  • Promote cell division
  • Cause leaf enlargement
  • Delay aging (senescence) in leaves, cut flowers, and fruits

4. Ethylene

  • Promotes fruit ripening
  • Influences elongation of roots, stems, and leaves
  • Triggers aging and leaf drop

5. Abscisic Acid (ABA)

  • Inhibits cell growth
  • Helps in stomatal closure, especially under stress conditions (e.g., drought)
